Cases of bullying in Western Cape schools have increased in 2022.
The Western Cape Education Department says 96 cases were reported in the first three terms of this school year, compared to 35 cases reported overall in 2021.
The issue has gained particular attention recently with footage of several incidents circulating on social media.
The WCED’s Bronagh Hammond says they’re looking to address the tendency to participate in bullying on social media platforms.
“Distributing or liking material on these social media platforms that is harmful to others makes on an accomplice of bullying. Therefore we need to support our learners and educate them on the harms of social media bullying, as well as bring in parents to address these issues at home.”
