One of Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen’s bodyguards remains in a critical condition at hospital after he tried to commit suicide, over the weekend.

The member of the VIP Protection Unit allegedly shot himself during the funeral service of a slain LEAP officer in Elsies River, on Saturday.

At the time, the 44-year-old old had accompanied Allen to the funeral at the United Reformed Church in Halt Road.

National police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they’re probing the matter.

Meanwhile, Allen says he’s saddened by the incident.

“I’m deeply shocked and hurt by what transpired. I’d like to wish the officer a speedy recovery. I hope that we will be able to get to the bottom of why this occurred in the soonest possible time.”

The Elsies River Community Policing Forum says residents have also been left baffled and worried by the incident.

According the forum’s Imraan Mukaddam, the incident shines a light on the impact of ongoing violence in all sectors of society.

“As citizens of one of the most beautiful, but also most violent cities in the world, we are all suffering from deep trauma. Even more so our Police and Law Enforcement officers who constantly bears the brunt of the violent onslaught in our communities.”
