Police Minister, Bheki Cele, was Manenberg on Thursday – after a recent series of deadly shootings in the area.

The aim of this visit is to strengthen ties between the community and police.

Additionally, to encourage instances similar to Wednesday, when members of the Anti-Gang Unit were tipped off on two suspicious men.

Community members previously spotted the two men, aged 22 and 30, standing with firearms in the area.

Based on the tip-off, police searched the premises of the 22-year-old and found the suspect in possession of a 9mm pistol.

Whereas, the 30-year-old suspect tried to flee when approached by police.

The police’s FC Van Wyk says Anti-Gang Unit members followed the suspect on foot and cornered him.

“A 30-year-old male was arrested for the illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and three 9mm rounds of ammunition found in his possession. Additional charges of prohibited firearm will be added. Both males will be appearing in the Athlone Magistrates court soon on the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.”
