The ANC in the Western Cape will engage with small-scale fishermen regarding the fishing rights allocation process.

It says it’s received numerous complaints from fishermen, most relating to how complex the process is — especially the points system.

Another issue is that the new licenses confer rights for the next 15 years.

The ANC here says it will be submitting an appeal to the National Fisheries Department on the 2021 application process next week.

Provincial leader, Cameron Dugmore, questions how some people who have been fishermen for years –  had their applications turned down.

“We, therefore, embarked on an engagement process and we’ve met in Mossel Bay and Hawston… we’ll be going to Kalk Bay, and on Monday: Saldanha. Once those meetings are completed, we will then draft a submission and submit a generic appeal, as an interested party, to the minister”
