As we enter the final days of the annual 16 Days of Activism Campaign for no Violence against Women and Children, yet another case will be heard in our courts.

A man has been arrested in connection with the attack on his wife in Heideveld last month.

He allegedly slit her throat and badly injuring the victim.

The 49 year old fled the scene and police were searching for him.

The couple had been separated for a year at the time of the incident.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says he was apprehended on Wednesday.

“Be advised that a 49 year old male was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, 2023-12-06 at 05:00 in a tracing operation in Manenberg. He will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Thursday, 2023-12-07  on charges of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH)”.

Meanwhile, a women and child advocacy group wants the suspect to remain behind bars.

Founder of Youth Arise Movement, Janine Booysen says the victim has been living in fear for days.

“ She did not know how to get out of her house, she did not whether or not the guy will come back, because before this incident he almost burned her. It’s painful, sad for women to go through all this and there’s no protection and there’s no to help”.
