Gun Free South Africa says it supports calls for confiscated illegal firearms to be destroyed at a provincial level.

The Western Cape Government wants a dedicated site here, which will possibly address the slow rate at which these guns are being destroyed at the head office.

The provincial branch of the national police has indicated that it’s open to the idea.

The four that have been identified aren’t suitable and other companies are not willing to help the police.

Gun Free South Africa’s Adèle Kirsten says this is a good idea, but a lot needs to be considered.

Kirsten adds that authorities need to be vigilant of unscrupulous and corrupt staff.

“They [should] have staff who have got security clearance, so they’re staff that we know won’t push the guns out the back door.”
