Western Cape Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie says an investigation is underway following the death of 24 people in three separate accidents in the province.

Six people including four children, were killed when the car they were travelling in collided with two other vehicles near Villiersdorp, on Friday.

Later that evening, five people lost their lives following a crash that involved a car, bakkie and bus on the N1 near Laingsburg.

On Saturday evening, 13 people died following a collision between a truck and a bus on the N1 near De Doorns.

The Priority Care Ambulance Services’ Christiaan van Zyl said, “At about 18:07 Priority Care Ambulance Services, alongside multiple other resources were dispatched from Worcester and surrounds for a mass casualty on the N1 Hexpass direction De Doorns. A triage system was established and 50 patients were transported to hospitals.  11 critical patients on scene were treated and sadly 13 people lost their lives.  13 entrapment had to be cut free from the wreckage using Jaws of Life”.

Mackenzie says he’s saddened by the high number of deaths on the province’s roads.

“It has been a tragic weekend on our roads and my heart goes out to those who are dealing with the trauma of losing their loved ones. I implore everyone travelling on our roads to take care, be safe, and obey the law. As we gear up for Easter, please make sure you prepare properly for long-distance travel”.
